In Great Chesterford we have a local Neighbourhood Watch group of likeminded people working together to help reduce crime and its effects in their neighbourhood. We are part of the Uttlesford Neighbourhood Watch Group and the wider Essex Neighbourhood Watch Association and share ideas, purchase crime reduction products and leaflets and liaise with a wide range of organisations. These other organisations include Essex Police, other members of the Community Safety Partnerships in each local authority, voluntary organisations and, most importantly, with people who want to make their neighbourhoods better places to live.
There has never been a better time to become involved in a Neighbourhood Watch. The community will benefit from everyone joining their local Neighbourhood Watch Group or starting their own group.
The question is – what can you do about reducing the opportunity of crime?
Most of us lead busy lives and know that any spare time is at a premium.
However, you may find you do have a few hours to spare and can use them as a volunteer to join Neighbourhood Watch and this will benefit your local community.
It is generally accepted that crime reduction and crime prevention are most successful when they involve everybody, not just the Police.
Neighbourhood Watch has a large and most successful crime prevention organisation, it started in the UK in 1982 and would not have lasted that long had it not been so successful in keeping crime down.
Behind it lies a simple idea shared by millions of people getting together with your neighbours to take action can cut local crime.
